Taking folic acid one year before pregnancy proves to be an insurance against premature birth. The Public Library of Science in PLoS Medicine published the study which states that consumption of folic acid 12 months before pregnancy can reduce preterm birth rate from 50% to 70% regardless of age or other factors.
Study Details
The study is an analysis based on data collection of more than 38,000 participants in a trial sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) U.S.
And the data were obtained excluding pregnancies with obstetric or medical conditions such as preeclampsia, chronic hypertension, or other abnormalities. "Through this study we have collected substantial evidence that administration of folic acid supplements for periods of more than one year before pregnancy is associated with a decrease of up to 70% of the number of very preterm birth and up 50% reduction in preterm birth, "concluded Dr. Radek Bukowski, professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Texas and lead author of the study.
The invitation is to all women in pregnancy possibility to consume 400 micrograms of folic acid daily.
